Cantor Fitzgerald downgrades Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE: GNK) from Buy to Hold. Price target lowered from $28 to $23.
Cantor analyst says, "We lower our price target to $23 (from $28) based on our 6.5x EV/EBITDA multiple to our new 2010 EBITDA forecast of $285 million (from $249 million). Given the discrepancy between our target and the current stock price, we downgrade GNK to a HOLD (from BUY)...We raise our 4Q:09 EPS estimate to $1.04 (from $0.98). For 2010, we now look for GNK to report EPS and EBITDA of $3.77 and $285 million (from $2.66 and $249 million), respectively. Finally, we introduce our 2011 EPS and EBITDA forecasts of $1.50 and $212 million, respectively...While we are encouraged by the company's experienced management team and highly modern and diverse fleet, we suggest the stock is richly valued in relation to our charter-adjusted NAV estimate of $10.12 per share. Furthermore, we look for 2011 earnings to come down significantly as above-market charters roll off and are replaced with charters at market rates."

Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (GNK) today announced that it has reached an agreement to enter into a time charter for the Genco Augustus, a 2007-built Capesize vessel, with Cargill International S.A. for approximately 10.5 to 12.5 months at a rate of $39,000 per day, less a 5% third-party brokerage commission. The time charter for the Genco Augustus is subject to the completion of definitive documentation and is expected to commence on or about January 23, 2010 following the vessel's scheduled drydocking. The previous time charter for the Genco Augustus was completed on January 10, 2010. |

Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd. (GNK) announced that its Baltic Trading Ltd. unit plans to sell up to $230 million of stock through an initial public offering, joining the growing list of companies looking to use the stock market's ongoing rebound as the time to go public. Filings have jumped the past several months, as have the number of companies completing their IPOs. Baltic Trading was formed this month to conduct a shipping business focused on the drybulk industry spot market. Genco is a drybulk shipper which deals with long term contracts. Baltic Trading plans to acquire and operate a fleet of ships that will transport drybulk cargo such as commodities while operating them in the spot market. It expects to finance the fleet - intended to be five to seven ships by the end of 2010 - "primarily with equity capital and to utilize little to no leverage, potentially using a revolving credit facility for bridge financing for acquisitions." Genco will invest $75 million for Class B shares. That will likely help give Genco more majority voting power over Baltic Shipping, which intends to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BDI. Drybulk shippers have seen results slump this year amid the drop in global trade. |

The Company recorded net income for the second quarter of 2009 of $37.6 million, or $1.20 basic and diluted earnings per share. Comparatively, for the three months ended June 30, 2008 net income was $60.9 million or $2.05 basic and $2.03 diluted earnings per share.

Baltic Dry Index Has First Gain in 7 Sessions on Chinese Demand
The Baltic Dry Index, a measure of shipping costs for commodities, posted its first gain in seven sessions on raw- material demand from Chinese steelmakers. The index rose 31 points, or 0.8 percent, to 3,734 points, according to the Baltic Exchange. It climbed on rates to hire iron-ore transporters as capesize vessels added 1.6 percent to $80,196 a day and smaller panamax ships advanced 0.7 percent to $22,742 a day.

A sustainable recovery in dry bulk shipping may be underway after last year's huge plummet, according to Dahlman Rose & Co. Rising Chinese steel prices have pushed Capesize rates to more than $35,000 per day, firm says, helped by Chinese government stimulus supporting its steel industry. Dry bulk stocks are substantially leveraged to an improvement in steel demand outside China, which Dahlman sees as likely during 2H09. Depressed vessel rates could rise 20% on recent improvements in charter rates, firm says, which would help balance sheets. Upgrades Diana (DSX), Eagle (EGLE), Genco (GNK), Safe (SB), Star (SBLK) to buy and Excel (EXM) to hold. (EBW) |
