AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--Sopheon plc geeft donderdag in een trading update aan dat zowel de omzet als de winst voor rente, belasting, afschrijving en amortisatie (EBITDA) in de eerste helft van 2010 duidelijke verbetering laten zien ten opzichte van dezelfde periode een jaar eerder, waarbij meer zicht op verbetering van de omzet over heel 2010 is.

Afton Chemical Sparks “Passion for Solutions” with Sopheon’s Idea Lab™ Software
Sopheon, the international provider of software and services for product lifecycle management, announced today that Afton Chemical, a global leader in the manufacture of lubricant and fuel additives, has selected Sopheon's Accolade® Idea Lab idea development solution to enhance the company’s product innovation processes. Already a user of Sopheon’s software for innovation process automation, portfolio management and resource planning, Afton Chemical will deploy Idea Lab to generate, nurture and develop new product ideas. Initial implementation will provide access to the solution for all Afton Chemical employees in the company’s EMEAI (Europe, Middle East, Africa and India) region.
Innovation is an important area of strategic focus for many of today’s chemical manufacturers. In a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers survey, 65 percent of the participating chemical company CEO’s said they plan to increase their investments in research and development over the next three years. That was more than any other sector except entertainment and media. A separate study determined that the top innovators will gain an edge over their peers from two factors: successful management of their product portfolios and strong idea management.
For Afton Chemical, the quest to improve ideation sprang directly from its growth strategies. “Our business goals are ambitious and challenging,” said Alan Cotter, senior product manager for Afton Chemical’s EMEAI region. “They are built around providing customer-based solutions within our existing markets. We have an excellent record of new product development, but saw a need to develop an enhanced approach to generating and capturing new ideas across the organization.”
As a start to crafting that approach, a cross-functional team was formed to define the organization’s ideation requirements. Emphasis was placed on key process features, with ease-of-use and administrative simplicity ranking high on the list. When it came to support for workflows of ideas, a telephone-based system was considered, as were several software solutions. According to Cotter, Sopheon’s Idea Lab was chosen “because of its robust functionality, user friendliness and minimal administrative support requirements.”
Idea Lab provides Afton with a comprehensive set of consistent, sustainable methods for successful ideation. It can be used to launch and manage campaigns, publicize and motivate participation, and establish communities of innovators within which ideas can be solicited and shared. The software supports scoring and filtering of ideas and provides a commons where users can converge, exchange thoughts and enhance concepts. Afton Chemical expects that, in addition to helping generate more high-value ideas, Sopheon’s Idea Lab will encourage greater employee involvement and collaboration in innovation activities.

Interim Management Statement
Sopheon plc, the international provider of software and services that improve the financial return from innovation and product development investments, announces its first interim management statement for the period since 1 January 2010 to the date of this announcement, in line with the requirements of the EU Transparency Directive.
Sopheon has continued to add business since the end of last year, building on the improved performance of the fourth quarter. Since the start of 2010, we have closed 12 new and extension license orders. Business from existing customers continues to hold up well. Revenue visibility for the full year from contracted business and recurring revenue streams now stands at £5.6 million, compared to £4.8 million on 24 March, the time of our last update. Total reported revenue for 2009 was £8.3 million. Operating costs before R&D capitalization were approximately £0.5 million lower in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the first quarter of 2009, reflecting the fact that cost adjustments taken last year took effect in the second quarter. Gross cash resources at the end of the first quarter of 2010 stood at £1.7 million.
The market is responding favourably to the new product enhancements that we introduced in 2009. Since the start of the year we have continued to innovate and deliver new solutions. Most recently, we announced the launch of www.isustain.com in partnership with Cytec Industries and the Beyond Benign Foundation. The site enables users to assess the sustainability of product formulations through an iSUSTAIN Green Chemistry Index rating, which can be independently certified if required. Users that wish to migrate beyond a basic level of interaction with the site will be required to enter into paid-for subscriptions.
Our sales pipeline continues to show encouraging activity, and suggests a resurgent appetite amongst large corporations to make positive purchase decisions where they perceive real business benefits. Predicting the timing and value of individual sales remains challenging, which can inevitably impact on the business performance. However, major analyst organisations like Forrester, Gartner and IDC continue to see growing traction and opportunity in our chosen market. In December 2009, Forrester noted increasing interest and investment in project and portfolio management tools for product development (PPM) and in the same month Gartner noted that software that supports product strategy and planning is gaining attention as a segment of the product lifecycle management (PLM) software market. Forrester also identified Sopheon as one of the clear market share leaders in the PPM space.

iSUSTAIN™ Alliance Launched to Promote Green Chemistry Awareness
Beyond Benign Foundation, Cytec Industries Inc. and Sopheon announced today that they have formed the iSUSTAIN Alliance to promote Green Chemistry awareness in the global chemical industry.
The alliance has launched a website, www.isustain.com, which allows chemical manufacturers and users to track their progress in developing greener products over time. They will be able to assess the sustainability of new products using a systematic approach, which is both comprehensive and simple, to help shape the formulation of these products. The site allows companies to test their green product attributes and give each product an iSUSTAIN Green Chemistry Index rating which will be independently verifiable through a certification process.
The academic community will be able to use the iSUSTAIN application free of charge, while company users will pay a small subscription fee. An advisory board for the Alliance will be established in the coming months, which will include representation from the website’s user community.
“As a non-profit organization dedicated to green chemistry education, we are excited to be involved with the iSUSTAIN Alliance. This new tool is long overdue and will be invaluable not only to industrial chemists designing safer processes and products, but also as a resource for students, educators and the designers of the next generation of molecules and materials,” said John C. Sopheon Teams with Concurrent Technologies Corporation and Twenty-Eight Others to Support Military Program for Development of Manned and Unmanned Vehicles
Sopheon, the international provider of software and services for product lifecycle management, announced today that it is part of a team of organizations working with Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) on a contract that CTC was awarded under the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) Omnibus Program. The program is intended to provide TARDEC with resources to augment its in-house capabilities in the development of manned and unmanned military ground vehicles.
The contract team of which Sopheon is a member under the TARDEC Omnibus Program encompasses 30 supplier and resource organizations led by Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC). The consortium includes large and small corporations, small disadvantaged businesses, not-for-profits and universities. The contract provides CTC with the opportunity to propose competitively on Cost Plus Fixed Fee (CPFF) and Firm Fixed Price (FFP) orders relating to TARDEC’s overall mission as the U.S. government’s primary research and development activity for military vehicle systems. The amount of business coming to Sopheon will depend on which CTC proposals are accepted by TARDEC. The contract is a five-year, multi-award, Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) agreement with a potential overall value to the consortium of up to $430 million.
TARDEC is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM). It is the Department of Defense’s full lifecycle engineering support provider for all manned and unmanned ground vehicle systems. TARDEC's mission includes working with Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC) and Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) stakeholders to maintain a sound, advanced science and technology base in order to address the warfighters' needs with innovative capabilities.
The TARDEC contract is the latest development in Sopheon’s successful efforts to establish a strong business beachhead in aerospace and defense (A&D) markets. The company launched its strategy for entering the sector less than three years ago. Since that time its base of A&D customers has grown steadily, and now includes such organizations as BAE Systems, EG&G, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, QinetiQ, Textron and the U.S. Navy and Air Force. The U.S. Army’s Ground Vehicle/Power and Mobility (GVPM) Program Office within TARDEC is also a user of Sopheon’s software.
“Our strategic focus on A&D markets is still relatively young,” said David Vangeison, Sopheon’s director for federal, aerospace and defense markets. “But our early experience has validated that this will be an area of great opportunity for us in the years ahead.
